Memorial Day Weekend Safe Driving Tips

  • May 24, 2019

Memorial day weekend essentially kicks off the summer season where people take advantage of the long weekend to sneak in a quick trip somewhere “summery”. After a frigid winter and a recent stretch of rain/storms, it can’t come quickly enough. According to the National Safety Council, The Memorial Day holiday weekend has an 11.5 percent increase in traffic fatalities compared to similar non-holiday periods. Also, more people die from driving than any other major form of transportation.

Driving safety tips:

  • Do not drive impaired by drugs or alcohol.
  • Buckle up!
  • Avoid distracted driving–cell phones, radio, checking maps. Have someone else assist with navigation as well as sending out messages. If you are driving alone, pull over to sort things out.
  • Make sure your car does not have any major issues that you should have tended to previously.
  • Take your time and avoid rushing/speeding.
  • Do not drive if you are tired.
  • Get an early start to avoid traffic.
  • Do not drive aggressively, and if someone else is, let them pass you.
  • Keep a safe distance between you and the car in front of you.
  • Follow speed limits and traffic signals.
  • Make sure car seats are installed properly.
  • Keep a watchful eye out for everyone else on the road. Be on the look out for drivers that are speeding, distracted or are a hazard on highways. Being a defensive driver is a must this weekend.
  • Look out for construction, many roads are in need of repairs after the winter months. Make sure to follow any adjusted speed limits.
