Safer Driving Tips for the Fall

Tips for safer driving in the Fall (avoid accidents that could potentially turn into a costly situation.)

Welcome to Fall. We have seen all the Pumpkin Spice Latte memes and starting today, the temperatures are supposed to become more “fall-like”.  The leaves have already starting to change color, which means they will start to fall. The days are getting shorter, and for many of us, the sun is currently in our eyes for both the morning and evening commute as it rises later and sets sooner. Stenger, Glass, Hagstrom, Lindars & Iuele LLP would like to share ways you can reduce your chances of getting into an accident.

Minimize sun glare in your car

  • Keep a pair of sunglasses in your car.
  • Make sure your windshield is clean and free of streaks.

Wet leaves and rain make for slippery roadways

  • Keep a safe distance between you and the car ahead of you.
  • Use your low beams or fog lights (NOT high beams) in foggy conditions.

Be cautious on bridges

  • The mornings and evening temperatures will begin to drop causing frosty roadways—take it slow.

Prepare for the unexpected

  • Watch out for deer as Fall marks the beginning of deer breeding season.
  • Check your tire pressure. Tires can lose pressure as the temperature drops.
  • Replace your windshield wipers so you don’t get streaks and your windshield is clean as can be to avoid extra glare.
  • If your headlights seem too dim, ask your mechanic to make sure they’re aligned properly.
  • Check the tread on your tires and make sure they are safe for colder months.
  • Check belts, hoses, and fluids (like oil).
  • Check your antifreeze because it regulates your engine’s temperature and ensures it runs properly.
  • Have your heat shield checked. If it’s installed incorrectly, or needs to be replaced, it can start a fire.
